Lundin Gold, through its Ecuadorian subsidiary Aurelian Ecuador S.A., owns the Fruta del Norte Mine (FDN), located in southeastern Ecuador in the Zamora Chinchipe Province.

Fruta del Norte (FDN) is one of the largest and highest grade gold deposits in the world currently in production. The Company has an experienced mine operations team dedicated to advancing FDN responsibly. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Lundin Gold realized first gold production as well as the first export of gold concentrate and doré. In the first quarter of 2020 FDN achieved commercial production. Lundin Gold operates transparently in accordance with international best practices and according to its three core principles: Working Safely, Environmental Stewardship and Respect.

THE ROLE

The Senior Health and Safety Manager is responsible for the design, planning and implementation of the HS&ER area strategy, as well as the development and implementation of health and safety standards and programs.  He/she will also ensure that all employees and contractors can access, understand and adopt health and safety protocols. He/she will lead the development, implementation and evolution of the company’s wellness, health and industrial safety policies, in compliance with the standards established by the company and external organizations, with an advanced management approach that allows the constant search for new methods and tools that increase the safety and health protection of all those who work for the company, to lead LUNDIN to be a world leader in Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene and to be 100% prepared to counteract emergencies. Mentoring and guiding his team (HS and ER) to achieve exponential growth in the good work of Safety in its integral form. Finally, the H&S Senior Manager will identify international best practices in industrial safety and health, in order to assess whether its implementation in the company enables the improvement of the systems in place.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote best practices in health, safety and industrial hygiene, implementing appropriate procedures to mitigate risks in the mine, plant and all operational areas, being an exemplary leader.
  • Achieve effective performance in achieving health, safety and industrial hygiene objectives in addition to emergency response, according to agreed standards.
  • Demonstrate health and safety leadership through personal behaviors and conversations, reporting incidents and participating in initiatives, reviews and investigations.
  • Guide, advise and mentor the chain of command on safety standards applicable to the various activities of the operation and report monthly to the management committee on progress and events.
  • Assume an active role in monitoring and mentoring the HS and SR team so that the team as a whole verifies that regulatory obligations and standards are met.
  • Create and lead the implementation and monitoring, based on the company’s strategy, of corporate policies on health and wellness, industrial safety and hygiene, both from external regulations that apply as well as internal organizational requirements.
  • Identify, analyze and implement legal regulations that may apply to Lundin, working with all managers and legal, and ensure that the company understands and has processes in place to support health and safety requirements and obligations, maintaining systems to formally manage regulations, national laws and decrees that may impact mining and exploration operations.
  • Support operational management to implement all applicable standards and programs in the activity.
  • Supervise the effective application of the appropriate procedures of the Health and Safety System and provide for their updating in accordance with changes in the Legislation and the Company’s Directives.
  • To monitor its application both internally and by contractors, ensuring the correct implementation of legal requirements and any regulatory changes that apply to the company, in addition to conducting internal and external safety audits. Perform safety audits to contractors.
  • Provide advice and support to Managers and superintendents in the implementation of safety and health requirements, playing an active leadership role in the ALSC program (Field Safety Leadership Activities) and crisis management plan, as well as emergency response.
  • Provide technical support to the Management Committee on any safety-related issue.
  • Providing internal safety training. Ensuring that personnel under his responsibility attend training sessions.
  • Preparing successors at all levels of the HS team, commensurate with and to eventually dispense with expatriate staff.
  • Manage people strategically within your department to make LUNDIN FDN a high performing organizational environment. Identify high potential people for their expertise, avoiding internal talent drain, and define succession plans for key positions.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional training in Industrial, Mining, Chemical Engineering or related fields.
  • Minimum experience of 15 years of which 10 must be in under ground mine and preferably developed internationally.
  • Solid knowledge of mining regulations and legal responsibilities in safety matters.
  • In-depth knowledge of the mining and processing business.
  • Computer skills to manage databases, reports, indicators, etc.
  • English: Advanced level required
