Lundin Gold, through its Ecuadorian subsidiary Aurelian Ecuador S.A., owns the Fruta del Norte Mine (FDN), located in southeastern Ecuador in the Zamora Chinchipe Province.

Fruta del Norte (FDN) is one of the largest and highest grade gold deposits in the world currently in production. The Company has an experienced mine operations team dedicated to advancing FDN responsibly. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Lundin Gold realized first gold production as well as the first export of gold concentrate and doré. In the first quarter of 2020 FDN achieved commercial production. Lundin Gold operates transparently in accordance with international best practices and according to its three core principles: Working Safely, Environmental Stewardship and Respect.

THE ROLE

Implement and follow up on the Environmental Management Plans of the different mining projects approved by the Ministry of the Environment, such as exploitation for FDN, initial and advanced exploration, ensuring the implementation of preventive environmental controls in construction activities in accordance with the provisions of environmental regulations, environmental licenses, permits, environmental management system, corporate standards and other commitments assumed by the Company.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide environmental technical support for compliance with Environmental Management Plans (EMP), environmental legislation, corporate, international and applicable standards to the different operating areas of FDN and contractors in order to ensure environmental care in the development of mining operations, metallurgical processes and ancillary activities.
  • Lead and coordinate with the operational areas the Change Management process (environmental releases, environmental construction plans) required for the construction activities of Fruta del Norte.
    Ensure the establishment of preventive environmental controls in the different stages of construction activities, based on the understanding of engineering designs and supporting technical studies (hydrological and geological studies, engineering designs, among others).
  • Participate and prepare quarterly and annual reports, in accordance with the provisions of environmental regulations and licenses granted by the Ministry of Environment and competent authorities.
  • Periodically evaluate the actions taken to comply with the Environmental Management Plan, report, develop action plans and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate and execute the pertinent activities to maintain in force the environmental permits obtained by the Company.
  • Ensure compliance with Corporate Standards, Environmental Management Plans, Environmental Management System and other commitments assumed by the Company by planning, coordinating and executing environmental inspections to operating areas and contractors.
  • Plan, coordinate and lead the internal environmental audits of the Environment and Permits department; includes providing support for Environmental Audits executed by third parties.
  • Develop procedures, instructions, plans, and indicators for proper environmental management.
  • Review the information gathered by the consultants hired by the Company for approval of environmental audits or renewal of permits, and then submit the documents to the institution responsible for analysis and approval.
  • Develop, implement and maintain Fruta del Norte’s waste management plan, review and improve it periodically.
  • Develop and execute in coordination with the entire environmental team the environmental monitoring programs for environmental air quality sampling, atmospheric emissions, non-ionizing radiation, environmental noise, noise, vibrations, soil and sediments.
  • Coordinate the execution of environmental monitoring with accredited laboratories and analyze the results obtained.
  • Coordinate archaeological and cultural heritage management activities required by Ecuadorian legislation, IFC standards and other commitments assumed by the Company.
  • Definition, implementation and monitoring of environmental indicators.
  • Participate and lead the attention of environmental emergencies according to the indications of the emergency leader and management.
  • Participate in environmental event investigations and provide support to operational areas in this process.
  • Ensure the implementation and closure of preventive and corrective actions according to the environmental events action plan.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Professional in environmental engineering, chemist, civil engineer, agricultural engineer, geographer or similar with a background in environmental management.
  • Fourth level degree in subjects related to environmental management, environmental audits, environmental engineering, mining and/or environment (desirable).
  • Experience of 2 to 4 years in management of mining activities (exploitation, exploration), Oil, Gas, Industrial; environmental management activities in construction or related industries.
  • Experience in Environmental Management Plans and management (desirable).
  • Experience in construction project control (civil structure, hydraulics).
