Lundin Gold, through its Ecuadorian subsidiary Aurelian Ecuador S.A., owns the Fruta del Norte Mine (FDN), located in southeastern Ecuador in the Zamora Chinchipe Province.

Fruta del Norte (FDN) is one of the largest and highest grade gold deposits in the world currently in production. The Company has an experienced mine operations team dedicated to advancing FDN responsibly. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Lundin Gold realized first gold production as well as the first export of gold concentrate and doré. In the first quarter of 2020 FDN achieved commercial production. Lundin Gold operates transparently in accordance with international best practices and according to its three core principles: Working Safely, Environmental Stewardship and Respect.

THE ROLE

Execute the implementation of the Biodiversity management and monitoring plan, within the framework of the legislation of Ecuadory. Advise on environmental aspects and biodiversity management, minimization of the impacts of Exploitation and Exploration activities, establishment of environmental criteria for ecological restoration processes, design of environmental indicators and calculation of the impact of the mining project on biodiversity.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, program and implement the Biodiversity Management and Monitoring Plan in the Fruta del Norte project, Environmental management plan (exploitation phase), other environmental plans and commitments of the Company.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Objectives, Corporate Standards, Environmental and Sustainability Management System, Sustainability Strategy and other Company commitments.
  • Coordinate conservation initiatives with partners from non-governmental organizations and the academic sector that are carried out in Fruta del Norte.
  • Prepare sustainability reports with international criteria such as GRI (Global Reporting Initiative, IFC (International Finance Corporation), ESRS ( European Sustainability Reporting Standards ), among others.
  • Calculate/measure the impact on biodiversity in Fruta del Norte operations.
  • Establish and implement indicators that allow optimizing biodiversity management in Fruta del Norte.
  • Supervise, ensure and optimize the ecological restoration processes of the areas impacted by the operation.
  • Supervise, ensure and optimize the activities of the Fruta del Norte nursery area.
  • Supervise, ensure and optimize wildlife monitoring and rescue activities in operational areas of the project.
  • Prepare technical reports and review/observe technical reports related to flora and fauna from contractors. Prepare executive reports, evaluation of alternatives and proposals for higher levels
  • Inform higher levels in a timely manner of deviations or findings that may affect the company’s reputation and take action on them.
  • Formulate plans and/or recommendations for the optimal management of biodiversity and fauna found in FDN’s operational areas, propose and implement timely actions.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Third level education in Biology or related with careers in life sciences, preferably with a Master’s degree in topics related to conservation, planning, ecology and sustainability.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in Biodiversity Management projects, Environmental baselines, environmental audits (biodiversity), contract administration (management of contractors), preparation of sustainability reports under international standards.
  • Knowledge in:
    • Management of biodiversity plans in mountain regions (flora, fauna, rehabilitation of areas, rescue and relocation of flora and fauna).
    • Design and implementation of indicators for biodiversity management (IFC International Finance Corporation).
    • Experience in calculating the impact on biodiversity.
    • Review of technical reports on Biodiversity generated for Authorities, international organizations such as IFC, among others.
    • Experience in management with external consultants in Biodiversity.
